I don’t know anything about flowers. Can you help me?
Yes, absolutely, we can help you. That’s what we’re here for. We know a lot about flowers.
How can I make my flowers last longer?
Flowers are living things, so don’t leave them in a baking car in the summer, or a freezing car in the winter. At home, keep them away from heat sources, like sun, vents, and hot lights. Top off and change the water now and then. Give the stem bottoms a fresh cut to improve water take up. And use the flower food sparingly.
MoonFlower sends cut flowers out in floral foam to keep them hydrated, so they arrive at their destination in top shape. We include a flower care card with easy instructions with every arrangement. You can also get flower care instructions on our website in
About Flowers.
Which flowers last the longest?
There isn’t a general rule about how long different flowers last. For example, some roses are very hardy, but other varieties are very delicate. What makes the biggest difference is how well the flowers are taken care of. At MoonFlower, we do a lot to prepare or condition flowers when they first come in, and we’re very careful about temperature control, hydration, lighting, and so on. But you have to take over once the flowers get to your home. Without too much trouble, you can make almost any flower last a few weeks. See our easy flower care instructions in
About Flowers.
Taller or long stemmed flowers may have an advantage though, because the stems can be recut more often, which means better water uptake and longer life. But somebody has to snip those stems, so it’s still really about giving the flowers a little TLC.
Do you have blue roses?
No, but there’s a reason. In fact, there’s no such thing as a blue rose in nature. Horticulturalists have been trying to cultivate them for hundreds of years with no luck. The way that a blue rose is made is by taking a white rose and dyeing it blue. The dye job however kills the rose right at the bloom, so recutting the stems and changing the water won’t help. Then customers complain that their flowers didn’t last. So we don’t do blue roses. Also, you probably shouldn’t give blue roses to anyone who might know something about flowers.
I saw a nice bouquet on your website, but can I make some changes?
Yes, just call and tell us what you need.
I have something unusual in mind - can you do ... ?
Yes. In fact, we even have a bit of a reputation for creative designs and special requests. For example, we’ve done a golf theme bouquet with real golf balls and tees for a retirement party, and we’ve done a full package Caribbean theme set around sea shells for a wedding aboard a cruise ship. And then there was the pool player’s funeral wreath designed with a ball rack. Go ahead, give us a challenge.
Is the vase included in the price?
Yes. If you see a vase in the picture, it’s included in the price shown.
Can I leave out the vase and get a lower price?
Yes, in some cases, but there are many bouquets that we can’t do that with. This is because the arrangement simply won’t work without the vase to hold it together. It’ll just end up as a pile of flowers, and it sure won’t look like it does in the picture. Call us for what the options are.
Can I bring in my own vase?
Yes. As a matter fact, you can bring in almost any container and we’ll find a way to work with it. We’ve done antique urns, soup tureens, boots, desk organizers, purses, …
I just had a fight with my wife/girlfriend - what flowers should I get her?
MoonFlower has helped put more than one couple back together, but it depends on how big the fight was! Roses are always a safe choice, but you may need something more special like orchids, or a spectacular (well, we’ll make it look spectacular) one-of-a-kind bouquet of mixed flowers that shows you made the extra effort. One more recommendation, and we know this might sound self-serving but we’ll give it to you anyway, is this: don’t be a cheapskate!
How often should I water the plant?
All our plants come with a tag that gives basic instructions on how to care for them, including how often to water them. If you lose the tag, just call us.
Do you have free delivery?
Well, the truth is that there’s no such thing as free delivery. Somebody has the pay for the vehicle, the gas, the insurance, the driver, and so on. We could include it in the cost of the flowers, but then either our prices would have to go up or you’d get fewer flowers for your money. And it wouldn’t be fair to the people who pick-up their flowers at our shop and don’t pay a delivery charge now. We have a flat delivery charge for all and we think that’s the fairest policy.
How long have you been in business?
MoonFlower Florist is an operating division and a registered trade name of Emily Leger Florals Ltd., which has been in continuous operation since 1991. We moved into our current Lawrence Avenue flower shop location in 2006. Our accountant made us do all the incorporation stuff, and we’re really just a small (but talented!) business.
Is there really such a thing as a moonflower?
Yes, there is. You can see it in the upper left corner on our web pages. And it’s a particularly unusual flower. Moonflowers only open at dusk when the sun starts going down, just when other flower blooms are closing, and then they stay open well into the evening. That’s because moonflowers are pollinated by moths, not bees, so they do their thing at night. Is that cool or what?
Moonflowers grow on vines and are popular in southern US gardens. But they can be grown much further north. We grow moonflowers in a container in front of our shop in Toronto in the summer. The blooms can be up to 4” to 5” across and look like stars with wings.
